Make this easy-to-hang large DIY pegboard for craft room storage – with a popular Ikea large picture frame.

Do you need a useful craft storage solution, but don’t have a lot of space to work with? Then your going to LOVE this large DIY Pegboard. No fancy craft rooms needed – just simple wall space!

You might be thinking, aren’t pegboards used to organize tools? Yup, their humble beginnings started out in the garage as tool organizers. They helped (and still do) organize hammers, screwdrivers, and nails, but they have recently morphed into other areas of home organization too. Pegboard ideas like: kitchen organization, pegboard jewellery display organizers, and in this case a pegboard craft storage organizer.

The reason pegboards work so well to organize is because everything is nicely displayed and easy to grab. No need to sift through dark drawers or storage containers – everything is in plain view! And when you know what you have – your more likely to use it too.

The other great thing about Pegboard organizers is they are big on space savings! You can either hang them on the wall or if they are in a frame, you can lean them against the wall too.

In addition to this amazing pegboard organizer, I have 2 other craft spaces were I keep my craft supplies. For my most used crafting supplies, like paints/brushes/canvases, I made this DIY Craft Table (counter-height) (for $100) which I can store a craft cart below with my painting supplies. My second area is this DIY Ikea Hack Craft Table for Small Spaces I made in my basement, where I store the rest of my crafting supplies.

What kind of craft supplies can you store in Pegboards

The sky is the limit in terms of the type of craft supplies you can store in these Pegboards. But for examples sake here are some craft pegboard ideas:

• Paint bottles
• Scissors
• Cricut tools
• Ribbons
• Washi Tape
• Markers and Brush Pens
• Paint Brushes
• Stickers / stencils
• Craft paper organization
• Sewing supplies
• Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
• Buttons, embellishments, and other small craft items
• Kids craft supplies for teacher classroom organization (crayons, construction paper, glue, markers, pencils)
• Decorative items like clipboards, picture frames, chalkboard, etc..
• Art Supplies (like mediums, washes, watercolors, gels, pastes, etc.)
• Baker’s Twin
• Vinyl rolls

Ikea Hack: Pegboard Frame

You don’t necessarily need a Frame around the pegboard. The reason I chose to use a frame is simple – it makes it easier to hang or lean against the wall AND it looks more polished.

If you choose not to use a frame, you will need to buy some extra wood and nail them to the wall first and have your pegboard nailed into those. This is so the pegboard accessories have enough room to slide into the hold. If the Pegboard is flush against the wall, then nothing can be hooked into the holes.

Can you use any frame with this DIY Pegboard?

As long as the frame is deep enough for the accessories to go through the holes once it hung. Coincidentally the Family of Frames by Ikea – The Ribba frames – work perfectly. They are deep enough so that the pegboard has enough distance between the wall when hung.

I used the largest Ikea Ribba frame, but they come in other sizes too, if your looking to make something a big smaller.

Also as a word of caution- If you want to hang this Pegboard on the wall, then try to store lighter accessories like light tools, paper, markers, stickers,etc.If you want to store items like heavy paint bottles, etc.. You might be better off leaning it against the wall either propped up on a desk, or on the floor.

Dollar store accessories

You can use the pegboard hooks for things like cricut tools and scissors, but for things like, paint bottles, paper, and other nick nacks, you’ll need some baskets and holders. To save money I scoured the Dollar store Home section for items I could use to organize with.

If you want to save some money , check out your local Dallartsore and look out for items that can be easily hooked onto the Pegboard hooks, Use your creativity and have fun!

Here are some of my finds to give you some ideas:

My Dollarstore Pegboard Accessories

1. Plastic Pegboard Baskets

found plastic baskets with mesh holes (so that the pegboard hooks can hook onto them). They were perfect for my collection of buttons, ribbons and stickers!

2. Pegboard Craft Paper Storage

I was over the moon when I fund this kitchen cupboard door organizer, that fits standard size papers perfectly. The “over the door” hook part, worked perfectly with the pegboard hooks!

3. Pegboard bins

We found galvanized tin buckets with handles that hung perfectly in place. The buckets are perfect for items like paintbrushes, markers, glue gun, glue sticks, pencils, etc..

4. Pegboard Paint Storage Hack: Shower Caddy

I also found this awesome shower cubby holder (that you would use to store soap and shampoo bottles in). I took off the suction cups, flipped it on its side and they magically stored my small bottle paints like a charm!

If you don’t want to mount the paint storage baskets onto the pegboard, this paint storage hack also works on any desktop too. Here are some pics of that (to give you an idea).

5. Pegboard Marker/ Pen Storage: Pringles Container Hack

I got a bit hack-y here and used an old Pringles container, covered it with Dollarstore contact paper, and it was then easy to hang on the Pegboard – with straight hooks. These work super well for markers, brush pens. especially if they come in a wide variety of colors. Having them displayed horizontally, makes it easier to pick out the color!

6. Ribbon and Scissor storage with Pegboard hooks

The scissors and ribbon roll didn’t need any extra accessories and fit nicely on the pegboard hooks

7. Shower Caddy as a Pegboard Storage Bin

This plastic shower cubby organizer works wel for my bottles of glue and fancy paint

8. Pegboard Decor Idea

I added a simple clipboard as both a decorative item, and if I even need to hand a paper to dry or hang in general. If you want to learn an easy way to make handletter fonts like in the quote art I created below (without needing to learn any hand lettering skills, check out this post.

Ikea Hack DIY Pegboard Organizer

Materials:

• Ikea Ribba Frame
• Pegboard from Home Depot or another hardward store (cut to the size of the inside of the frame). I got mine cut in store at Home Depot
• Pegboard hooks
• Pegboard organization baskets and accessories (Dollarstore)
• Strong Glue
• Optional: a heavy weight(100lbs) picture hanging hook (if hanging)

Step By Step Tutorial

1. Take your Ikea Ribba Frame, and take out the original backing, photo matting, and plexi glass protector. The only thing you need for this project is the hollow frame

2. Get your pegboard ( I got mine from Home Depot) cut to the same size of the backing of the frame (the part you just took out above). To make it easier (and without having to measure) take the backing to the hardware store with you, and they can cut it to the exact measurements.

3. Take some glue and put it in the inside of the frame where the pegboard will touch. This is to give extra reinforcement of the pegboard to the frame.NOTE: I didn’t do this step, but in hind site I should have. Maybe I’ll go back and fix it one day.

With glue still wet, take your cut pegboard and place it in the frame and press it against the glue. Close the metal tabs around the pegboard to secure it in place. Let the glue dry.’

4. Wait for the glue to dry. If hanging on the wall, take a picture hanging kit (you can buy some that support 100lbs) to hang it. Otherwise You can lean it against the wall on top of your desk or on the floor.

Your pegboard is ready! Use your pegboard hooks and Dollarstore accessories to start hanging and organizing all your craft supplies!
