Perfect Adult & Kid Crafts For Mothers Day
This mothers day art and craft project was super special, since I got to make them alongside my kids (ages 4 and 7). While I crafted some for my mom and mother-in-law, they crafted some for their mama :). It was pretty neat.
I was inspired to create these super cute and easy cards from a fabulous and creative craft blogger from I Heart Crafty Things. Her DIY mothers day cards looked so gorgeous, I was excited to try them out with the kids. We didn’t have a some of the items on hand so we changed it up and had fun putting our own creative spin to them.
I also saw first hand how easy and FUN this card idea is not only for adult crafters but kid crafters too (even preschool aged kids)!
No matter how young or old, I hope you also feel inspired to use your imagination make these cards with your own unique style. You got it in you to make beautiful things, and this simple craft is awaiting your personal touch.
Now on to the mothers day card making tutorial! I hope you enjoy the card making and some mother day cards ideas along with it!

Materials Needed
- Cupcake liners in 2 sizes (standard size and mini size)
- 5 x 7 Blank cards (or construction paper cut and folder into cards)
- Small pom poms
- Glue
- White Sharpie (or any color marker)
- green crayon
Optional:
- Green pipe cleaners
- Green cupcake liner
Step-by-step Mothers Day Card DIY Instructions
Step1 : Pick your Cards
Choose your blank cards. I chose cards in natural brown color (the texture kind of reminds me of those recyclable paper grocery bags from long ago) which gives it a warmer vintage-y homemade look.
Another option is to make your cards with construction paper (that’s cut to size and folded). This might work better if your making it as a classroom craft for preschool or school aged kids.
Whatever you choose, make sure the card size is roughly 5″ x 7″. This size of card will work perfectly with all the standard size cupcake liners. If the card is a lot smaller than that you might have to pre-cut ALL your cupcake liners to make them fit nicely.
Step 2: Flower Layer 1
Layer 1: To make the outer (base) layer for the flower, take a standard size cupcake liner and flip it inside out, so that the pattern/colored part is on the inside. By doing this, it gives a natural flower-y shape that’s 3D or pop out.
Step 3: Flower Layer 2
Layer 2: To make the second layer, take another standard size cupcake liner, and flip it inside out (like the step above). This time take a pencil or pen and draw a line across the border (if you want to get precise, between 1/4″ to 1/2″, depending on how much you want this layer to show). Cut along this border.
Step 4: Flower Layer 3
Layer 3: to make the 3rd (and final) layer, this time take a mini size cupcake liner. Turn it inside out like the previous layers. Do not cut.
Note : for this tutorial we made a 3 layered flower, but if you can also make more layers (I made some with multiple layers, see pictures at the bottom for more ideas)
Here are all the layers ready to be glued
Step 5: Glue the layers together
Glue Layer 1, Layer 2 and Layer 3 together
Step 6: Add pom pom centers
Take some small sized pom poms and glue them to the center of the flower. Some other idea’s if you don’t have pom poms on hand (buttons, glitter glue, foam stickers etc..)
Step 7: Glue Flower to Card
Take your flower and glue it to your card.
Step 8: Add Flower Stem & Leaf
To make the stem and leaf, I’ll give you a few options.
- Use a green crayon.
- For more texture and 3D look, glue on a green pipe cleaner as the stem and draw on the leaf with a green crayon
- Nifty idea: if you have any green cupcake liners, you could cut them in leaf shapes (they look really pretty since the folds in the liners give the leaves some extra texture).
- Use green construction paper and cut out stems and leaves
- Use a green marker
Step 9: Add Mother’s Day Message
Write on a special message for your mom! We used a white Sharpie marker, but you can also use a black marker if you have that laying around. Another idea is to use letter stickers to spell “mom” or any other message.
We like to have fun with hashtags so here are some funny (or punny!) and cute mothers day cards saying and hastags we came up with. These mothers day message for cards would also work as birthday cards for mom too!
- #MumsTheBest
- #MomIsMyBud
- #1BlossomestMom
- #MomIsBlossom
- #ILoveMom
- #MamaLove
- #momRules (my daughter’s idea, not mine – I swear! 🙂 )
- #LoveYouMom
- #MomRocks
- #HappyMothersDay
Step 10: Optional (personalize)
Optional: If you have a blank card, why not write down a special message for your mom and tell her how much you love and appreciate her- in your own words! Your mama will love it!
